I'm a writer, performer, storyteller and nerd. This is part personal blog, part drop-off for professional stuff. If I was capable of separating the two, I swear I would.

Know Everything!

improvnonsense:

I get in trouble for saying that because I deliberately say it in a jerk manner. KNOW EVERYTHING. When someone says “I didn’t know the movie my partner was mentioning” I’ll sometimes say “Well, you don’t HAVE to know it but it would be easier if you knew it.”

And then people are like “Why do I have to like Star Wars?”

And I say “Who said anything about Star Wars?”

“All these improv nerd boys love Star Wars and can’t stop mentioning it. I hate that HAVE to know it.”

I know. It’s annoying.

This is interesting and I agree. For real, my greatest regret as an improviser is bungling a Wolverine scene on Harold Night. Mostly because when I did start reading X-Men I realized he might be my favorite? No, that’s stupid. Beast is. Kitty Pryde? ANYWAY.

It’s not a gender thing. Due to the Interests-Demographic of this Community there is just some stuff that comes up a lot. There’s a high population across both genders of people who read comic books, like boardgames, watch reality television, etc. While Will talks a lot about the benefits of being knowledgeable (I agree!), I think his post is chiefly about avoiding potentially isolating or frustrating situations onstage. His recommended reading list isn’t to be taken as a “This Is All of The World Knowledge You Need To Make You Better.”

I have a complementary idea: If you have interests or specializations outside of the areas that come up a lot, you have an obligation to share them with your team during socializing hours. And if you know your teammate has areas of specialty that you’re unfamiliar with, you have a duty to find out more about it. Because it will make you more interesting and your team more in sync and bring more variety to your scenes and, probably, the community at large.
