I'm a writer, performer, storyteller and nerd. This is part personal blog, part drop-off for professional stuff. If I was capable of separating the two, I swear I would.
Catching Elephant is a theme by Andy Taylor
For reasons that escape me, I’ve read The Best American Essays every year for the last three or four years. They are frequently terrible, generally depressing and only occasionally interesting.
This year, they were almost exclusively about death.
Of 24 essay, the following contained -
Death (serial killers, police violence, natural causes, AIDS, earthquakes, etc): 9
Abortion: 1
Plane crashes: 1
Baggage with a dead parent: 2
Baggage with a parent who could be dead: 1
Racism: 2
Just cancer: 1
Getting hit by a bus: 1
Impenetrable essay about chapels, farmland, essays themselves: 3
Plus one that dealt with the academic tenure grieving process, one about phone sex and one essay by Zadie Smith about facebook. Those three were good.
So I’ve basically been in a constant state of depression/panic since I started reading a few weeks ago.
Not gonna do that again.
